"extract": "Marcus Aurelius (121–180 AD) was a Roman emperor from 161 to 180 and a Stoic philosopher. He was the last of the rulers known as the Five Good Emperors, and the last emperor of the Pax Romana, an era of relative peace and stability for the Roman Empire.\n\nHe served as Roman consul in 140, 145, and 161. He is best known for his philosophical work Meditations, written in Greek, which survives as a significant document of Stoic philosophy.\n\nMarcus Aurelius ruled over the Roman Empire at a time of several wars, including the Marcomannic Wars against the Germanic peoples along the Danube frontier. Despite this, he is remembered as a philosopher-king who embodied the Stoic ideal of wise governance."
